We have two churches in our community: St Laurence in Tidmarsh and St Nicholas in Sulham.

The noticeboard outside each church shows details of services and times.

Friends of St Laurence

The church has stood in Tidmarsh for nearly 1,000 years and has a special place in the social, religious and historic heritage of the village. The Parochial Church Council (PCC) as representatives of the small regular congregation is charged with the routine upkeep and maintenance of the church fabric. They are able to do this partly through the support of the local community at events such as the annual fete. However this is not enough to ensure the preservation and enhancement of the historic building for future generations. To help address this gap the Friends of St Laurence were formed in 1998 with the aim of supporting the PCC in maintaining and improving the fabric of the building as an historic building for the benefit of this and future generations.

The Friends raise funds through annual subscription and fund raising events, typically a summer concert and an autumn talk. These events, held in the church, are usually free with a retiring collection. The funds raised by the Friends are not used to pay the day-to-day running expenses of the church. The committee of the Friends is a secular group who decides in consultation with representatives of the PCC how the funds raised should be spent.

Over the last few years the Friends have funded the following projects:

arrow The restoration of the mediaeval wall paintings.
arrow The repair and cleaning of the unique floor tiles.
arrow The repair of the roadside flint wall.
arrow The repair of the west stained glass window which was damaged more than 30 years ago.
arrow Replacement of the rusted window guards.
arrow Treatment of the east wall of the church which was suffering from damp.
arrow Repair of the guttering over the east wall.

These have been quite major undertakings costing in total about £18,500 and the Friends’ funds are now seriously depleted.

Membership of the Friends is by annual subscription. Subscription of £25 per year for a minimum of four years earns a certificate of membership signed by the Bishop of Reading who is the patron of the Friends of St Laurence. A single donation of over £250 will earn a Benefactor certificate signed by the Bishop. Of course, the Friends will be extremely grateful for any donation. If you would like to become a member and make a regular donation to help to preserve this historic building for the future, please complete our membership form and return it to Jon Chishick at Conyers Green, Tidmarsh, RG8 8ES. If you are a taxpayer, please also complete the Gift Aid section so that we can recover an extra 25p from the taxman for every £1 that you donate.
